Operation
To make the system easy to learn and operate, SAMS uses a color-coded theme to convey a student’s access
status to the operator where Red background indicates that access should be prohibited due to an access
violation displayed in the notes section. This condition always requires the acknowledgement of the operator.
A Yellow background indicates that there are special conditions associated with this student. In SAMS, this
is referred to as Flagged status. Further information or instructions are provided in the notes section.
Flagged conditions also require operator acknowledgment. A Green background indicates that access is permitted.
Other notifications may be displayed as well. No operator acknowledgement is ever necessary for green conditions.
SAMS, for the most part, operates hands-free. Operator intervention is only required to acknowledge access
violations and flagged conditions. All acknowledgements are logged by SAMS, for accountability purposes.
Security staff must also be instructed on handling each condition as it is presented, much like a traffic cop.
As far as the students are concerned, they simply scan their Ids at the laser scanner and pick up slips from
the partial cutting thermal receipt printer when late or returning from absence.
